Mark Wahlberg trudges through this dull cod-noir fantasy with his standard bemused grimace — not quite a bulldog chewing a wasp, more a bulldog vexed by a wasp alighting on its nose. In a CGI-stylised New York, he’s a cop on the trail of his wife’s killer, a quest that leads him to discover a military-industrial plot that turned soldiers into superhumans. Somewhere along the line, it transpires, this scheme fell victim to the Valkyrie of Norse mythology. This unusual source is the only novelty in John Moore’s film, whose action scenes rely on the sort of slow-motion shoot-outs that were popularised by The Matrix almost 10 years go.
