New Kids in Town: Jamie T

Who is he? A 20-year-old from Wimbledon, Jamie T is a tantalising talent. He epitomises the current explosion of home-grown creativity flourishing online, away from the stunting formulas of the mainstream and its outlets. A street-folk misfit poet with an eye for tiny but telling details about young love, creeping anxiety and the quest for silver linings to contemporary clouds, Jamie T accompanies himself on an acoustic guitar, but evades any of the pigeonholes that this minimal instrumentation might imply. So, no, he’s not the new Dylan. Nor, though, is he the next Streets. Instead, he’s a genuinely uncategorisable new artist, forging out of bare-bones folk, punk and chanson stylings a thrillingly scruffy and scuffed-up sound.
