New kid on the block: Jack Penate

Who is he? A young Londoner, Penate looks set to become the latest beneficiary of the “web-driven breakthrough” phenomenon. Signed to the uber-trendy label Young Turks, Penate will probably have to put up with some digging into his connections, never mind (qv Lily Allen) the authenticity of his rough-hewn London accent. It’s a process he should emerge from intact, so wonderful, fresh and open are his songs. His debut double-A side captures these qualities perfectly: Second, Minute or Hour is a skiffled-up hymn to unrequited love, Got My Favourite an All Mod Cons-like riff on pick-yourself-up optimism. His good looks won’t hurt him; nor will his lively style. But in the end, it’s about the songs.

He’s got them.
