Newly labelled and screwcapped, but thankfully within lies the same vibrant, citrusy, parellada grape-based modern Spanish white with the sort of lively fruit that has wide apéritif and fish-dish appeal.

As young and juicy as the white, but this screwcapped red is made from Spain’s top tempranillo grape, and its plump, plummy style closes on a bold, earthy, inky, even barbecue food-suitable note.

2006 Wente Take Seven, Small Lot Red Wine, Central Coast, California, Waitrose, down to £6.74 until September 28.

I am not usually a big fan of Wente’s wines, but this new, predominantly cabernet arrival, made from seven different red grapes, delivers lots of soft, spicy, funky, red-fruits flavours.

2005 The Hedonist, McLaren Vale Shiraz, Australia, Waitrose, down to £8.99 until September 28.

The other star red turn in Waitrose’s New World wine extravaganza is this impressive, limited-edition shiraz. Its elegant, oaky, curranty 14.5 per cent alcohol spice cries out for the first bold game dishes.

2006 Brézème Blanc, Côtes du Rhône, France, Yapp Brothers (01747 860423), £13.95.

Brézème is a tiny, forgotten Côtes du Rhône village whose oak-aged, medium-bodied dry whites ooze class, like this fine, floral, surprisingly mouthwatering marsanne, topped up with viognier.

The stars of the Brézème show are the dreamy syrah reds, as anyone slurping up this gorgeous, perfumed, peppery, dried cherry-stashed, game food-suitable ’05 will vouch.
