2006 White Burgundy, Antonin Rodet, France, Sainsbury’s, £5.49. Sainsbury’s own label is one of the classiest and best value sub-£6 white burgundies on the high street, and blessed with lots of gentle, appley, oaky fruit – precisely what you would expect from tried and trusted négociant Rodet.

2007 Cono Sur Gewürztraminer, Bio-Bio Valley, Chile, Sainsbury’s, £5.99. An old stir-fry friend, with all the elegant, exotic, peach and stone-fruit Chilean flavours you’d anticipate from Cono Sur, plus sufficient sweetness to offset oriental dishes’ heat and spice.

2005 Finca L’Argatà, Montsant, Joan d’Anguera, Spain, Tanners (01743 234455), £12.95. Lots of you called Tanners to order its latest list; now you should scoop up this gorgeous red duo, with the Anguera brothers’ syrah blend oozing with seductive, herby, violet and raspberry spice.

2005 Pinot Noir by Farr, Geelong, Australia, Tanners, £18.95. This pinot really is one in the eye for the Burgundians, and the closest Australia has yet got to the Côte d’Or, with some terrific, lively floral, gamey, smoky fruit – perfect to accompany the new season’s game.
