Storm's
full feature list
A new touchscreen BlackBerry phone is launched today, ready to battle with the likes of Apple’s iPhone and the new “Google phone” in the run up to Christmas.
The BlackBerry Storm aims to blow away its rivals with an “intuitive touchscreen” which can be pressed down like buttons on a keyboard, unlike other touchscreen mobiles where users tap the unresponsive glass.
The Times was granted a brief look at the new phone yesterday. With its neat metallic edges and rubber sides, the Storm looks sleek and stylish, but is also easy to hold and use. However, at first glace it is thicker and heavier than rival devices.
The new BlackBerry joins a crowded market for touchscreen phones, which is dominated by Apple’s iPhone. Nokia and Google have released new smartphones in recent weeks, but industry experts consider the iPhone to be the “sexiest” touchscreen and has set the bar high for similar devices.
BlackBerry phones have long been seen as an unglamorous device, the reliable companion of office workers and travelling salesman who mainly use it check and reply to e-mails on the go.
Now, in an effort to take on the likes of the iPhone, the sleek new BlackBerry Storm has the ability to download music and movies, which can be played on the device.
Just like other touchscreen devices, the Storm takes high-quality digital photographs, has a built-in GPS system and gives users fast internet access to websites such as YouTube and Facebook.
The phone is available exclusively with Vodafone in Britain and will be free to customers who must sign up to a 18-month contract that costs £35 a month.
There has already been a lot of interest in BlackBerry’s latest offering, with Vodafone saying that they are already receiving a thousand pre-orders for the new phone a day since the manufacturers announced it was releasing a new phone last month.
Speaking to The Times, Mike Lazaridis, Chief Executive of RIM, the makers of BlackBerry phones, said that the big advantage of the new device was its intuitive touchscreen which can be pressed down, allowing fast typing as on a keyboard.
“Here, you have a touchscreen that people don’t have to learn how to use, because its very natural,” he said.

Scott Richards, the iPhone does not need for scroll bars, you simply drag your finger the screen, up/down/acrossI forgot youre a critic who have never touched a iPhone and yet you judge it!!!
You forget the iPhone is/was aimed at the business market, how many business users send MMS - I dont!!!
Robert Oakes, Wolverhampton, England
I also have used Nokia, Sony Ericsson, etc but Blackberry stands out to be most useable, particularly for business.
Others have fancy features but they don't really work. When BB offers a feature, it would work brilliantly.

It's amazing to me that a high profile review of such devices fails to mention HTC and windows mobile phones. The Google G1 is the same hardware (broadly) as the HTC TYTN II. The new HTC Touch Pro is the obvious contender in this category and has a hardware sliding keyboard too!

I hope other contract options will be available. I would gladly pay full price for this phone if I wasn't tied to a £35 contract. I don't talk or text very much, I want a device like this mainly for internet access.

Nokia really need to market the E71, so people would realise what the best smartphone on the market really is!
I've been through dozens of handsets and believe you me
the E71 is easily the best phone I've ever owned.

Let's face it, It'll all about brand. Apple have it covered - cool, funky, fun, stylish etc. the rest have a lot of work to do to sway consumers. Blackberry a dull, work -a holics choice.
Marlon, London,
If that advert & that interface don't reference the visual style of Apple, then you can all expect me to deliver your presents come Xmas...
Bob, Guildford, UK
Compare with the Nokia E71. That's right. There's no comparison. Next.
Terry, London, Great Britain
honestly i completely agree that iphones are overrated, as fun as they are nothing can compete with how useful blackberries are. somebody that has used blackberries could never go back, for a college kid or spoiled highschool brat iphone could be a blast but for people in the real world, please...
eda , london, uk
I'll wait a couple of years until they make their way on ebay at less then half the price...
Mohammed, London, UK
I disagree with Peter from Vancouver. Blackberry has been around for ages, it's Apple that imitates other works, like the interface for their iPod's? It's from Creative. iPhone stylee? Blackberry. iPhone is highly overrated.
David, Belfast, UK
come 2nd Jan 09 something new will be out !!
waheed, london, uk
Why are you guys getting worked up about tech?
If it fits your needs and can afford it, buy it. Otherwise, don't. No need for the moaning inbetween.
Howard, Manchester,
And NOOOO, AT& T ! There is hope yet. Who's the artist/song in the ad?

I hope it is capability with the Bluetooth in my LR2?

Blackberry are not "imitating" Apple - this new smart phone is totally different from the iPhone. The media are simply in love with phrases like "iPhone rival" and "taking on the iPhone"!
Harry , Oxford,
Shame there won't be any bankers left to buy one...
Tom, London, UK
It must be an iPhone lover who wrote the "cons" for the Nokia 5800! It has been lauded industry-wide for being incredibly cheap, at a price that will sell millions. And the comment about storage is pure nonsense too, it can take micro-SD cards up to 32GB! Please rewrite it with an element of truth.
Alex Kerr, London, UK
Another company that imitates Apple, how original!
Peter, Vancouver, Canada
Why do people still think the iPhone is great? No Flash. No Java. No video camera. No MMS (WHAT!!!) No cut&paste. No scroll bars. Terrible echo. Not much of a phone really.
Look at any company and you'll see the decision makers use Blackberry and wanabes use iPhone.
Scot Richards, Brisbane,
Ha ha. Great idea: headed into a world depression who's going to spend a hundred dollars on one of these things? Not bloody likely. From here on out its food, shelter and self-patrolling neighborhoods.
Stan Parks, Beltsville, USA
Can't wait for the Storm to come...
One Storm I am looking forward to... lol
It's gonna give Apple iPhone 3G a run for it's money and more.
Better Specs... Bettter Looking... And most likely fewer problems!
BRING IT ON BLACKBERRY!

Intuitive? New? The pressure-based touchscreen has been around for decades. I had one on my Handspring Visor back in 1999, Palm popularized them in the late 1990s, and Apple used them in the first PDA (the Newton) in the mid 1990s. New? Give me a break.
jon, stanford,
If one read the pro and con. You will realize that all the "pro" comments are basic device functions listed in product promo. and all the "con" comments are how it looks or feel. Other than iPhone, none from real test run. Very superficial and shallow in terms of new products evaluation.
dchai, Louisville, USA
Yes - but can you watch Live TV as you can on a Treo 700P ?You can't do that on an I-phone
Ira Brent, kingwood, TX, USA
You say the Storm doesn't do anything new - but the whole point of a Blackberry is that it handles email, contacts and tasks better than any other handset available; especially if you use an enterprise server but even if you're using the included internet server.
