Troubled businessman Christopher Foster killed his wife and teenage daughter and burned down their £1.2 million mansion because he could not face telling them they were about to lose the home, his mother believes.
Enid Foster has spoken of her grief and shock at the loss of her son, daughter-in-law Jill, and “beautiful” 15-year-old granddaughter Kirstie.
West Mercia Police issued short statements from Mrs Foster and from Jill Foster’s brother, Roger Doley.
Mr Foster, 50, killed his wife and daughter before taking his own life at their house in Maesbrook, Shropshire, police say.
Jill Foster was shot in the head. The cause of Kirstie’s death is yet to be determined. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.
Enid Foster, who lives in south Shropshire, said her son had talked to no-one about his financial troubles
“It’s come as a tremendous shock,” she said. “So many of his friends have told me that, had they known, they would have helped him however they could.
“They were a very close, loving family unit and I don’t think he could face telling them they were going to lose everything, but I am in no way condoning what he’s done.”
Mrs Foster described how her granddaughter, who loves horses, had taken part in the Berriew Show the weekend before her death: “Her last ever show and she got first place in the championship.”
She concluded: “Life will never be the same without them.
Kirstie’s horses also died, and polive believe they too were shot by Mr Foster.
Roger Doley said his sister was “a nice girl” with a nice smile and welcoming personality.
“Jill just loved life,” he said. “I’m so heartbroken; I can’t believe she’s gone forever.”
“Kirstie was so interested in the horses that it became part of Jill’s life too. She treated all the animals like pets; even the chickens had names.”
“We’re finding it very difficult to come to terms with.”

Everytime i read about this it makes me sick to my stomach, What must have been going on in his head beggars belief
My heart goes out to family and friends. x
Mat, oxford,
How could he shoot his wife and daughter, taking everything with him when he went himself?.. typical male mentality - it has happened before, and sadly will happen again. If men would open up and talk more about these things it would help alleviate stress before it takes over and ends badly...
GF, Otley,
He was a man who believed that everything can be owned: not just the house, but the lives of his wife, daughter, horses and dogs.
Pure ego and an almost meglamania; so he would have to move to another house, so what? No big deal.
Their lives were not his to take. His own yes, but not theirs.
