Confusion today surrounded an Iranian claim that a US plane had violated its territory and had been forced to land in the Islamic Republic.
The semi-official Fars News Agency said that five American military officials had been interrogated at an unnamed Iranian airport for a day after the incident. It said they were released after it was established that the plane had not entered the territory intentionally. It did not say when the incident happened.
The reports were immediately dismissed, however, by the Pentagon which said it was not aware of any plane being forced to land in Iran and said none had recently been missing.
Some subsequent, contradictory Iranian reports suggested the plane was in fact an American transport jet, not a military plane, while others said it belonged to a European aid agency. Another report said the plane was Hungarian.
Estimates also varied as to the number of people on board, with some reports suggesting US military personnel were on board, while another said there were none.
"According to the combined air operations centre, all our aircraft are accounted for and we have no reports of any aircraft landing in Iran," US Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Ryder said.

Ms. Murphy, Iran most certainly bombed Iraq during their war. When you remember that Iran funds Hezbollah, you realize its reach is wide and deadly, with bombs detonated as far away as Argentina. I'm not sure how you decided Iran had bombed zero countries.
Violet, Houston, USA
Ahmanutjob is trying to create a crisis because the price of oil continues to fall.
Michael, USA,
"International panic" on whose part? Other than the news websites that went into brief but entertainingly silly hyperdrive over this damp squib of a story, that is.
Mark, Worthing, UK
"I wouldn't trust Ahmadinejad any further than I could throw him. He is a snake in the grass."
Says someone whose country has bombed over 25 countries since WWII regarding a country who has bombed 0 countries since WWII. I know who I'm more scared of.
Athena Murphy, Hampstead, UK
I wonder how much of the media paints either entity in a negative fasion?
Dean, AKROWDY, USA
Why is Nuclear technology so available? I think the whole macho nuke thing is out of hand.. It's only a matter of time before the Israel will have to act to avoid attack.
Maybe not these are children with old books, hatred and over sized toys.
hugh Nott, london, united Kingdom
It is only a matter of time when the first American refugees are going to flee to Iran to escape the economy crises and the madness of their leaders.
You'd better be kind to the Iranians otherwise which other country would take you as refugees?
Americans are not popular anywhere!.
Bassim, Uppsala, Sweden
If the US, Russia, France, China, UK, India and Israel can have nukes, why can't Iran? Legally they have a right to any kind of weapon. The Americans encouraged Pakistan to acquire nukes to counter India. Now the Russians are doing the same in Iran to counter the US? I call that fair trade.
Rakesh Krishnan, Auckland, New Zealand
Oil play just like the "Patrol Boat" incident and all the other attempts to prop up oil prices. Psycho boy needs to pay for all that new hardware hes contracted for with Russia. He ordered it based on 130+ a barrel oil.
And Vladi will get PAID !!!!
mctexans, Houston , usa
Iran is trying the same old tactic. Grab some american hostages and hold them to try to keep Israel or the USA from bombing it's nuke facilities. This time, Iran blew it because there were no Americans on that plane. This was the warning shot the whole world was watching for, all planes r at risk
MARK SMYTH, TORONTO, CANADA
It is way past time that the USA start calling in ALL it's chips (economic, political, etc) with the world in order to isolate Iran! Furthermore, the world should be told that this country will react to any provocation by Iran in international waters/space with a swift and thorough response!
Al Bennett, Panama City, Florida , USA
Iran/Persia hasn't invaded another country in over 200 years.
If only other countries were so peaceful.
It is too bad about Ahmadinejad's big mouth, but it is the Supreme Leader not the PM who is in charge of their military.
Keith S, Winnipeg, Canada
America is the wolf out of the old Aesops fable. They will find any excuse to eat up the little lamb (Iran). Besides with the Western economic civiliisation is in its death throws, it has to steal someone elses resources desperately if it is to survive.
keith bentham, Wigan, uk
I wouldn't trust Ahmadinejad any further than I could throw him. He is a snake in the grass.
Kim Righetti, Upland, Calif. USA
There is no evidence demonstrating that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, and none that Iran even wishes it had nuclear weapons. To the contrary, Ahmadinejad points out that the USSR collapsed despite having piles of nukes and the missiles to deliver them all over the planet.
James Canning, Seattle, USA
The Iranians said this because they wanted to boast, to brag that they downed an American plane because they know that America is the bigger guy and they wanted fame.
Luigi DiMera, Brooklyn, NY, USA
So, not only was it not an American plane, it also didn't happen today? The article says the "incident" dated back to Sept. 30. What is Iran trying to do?
Christine , Muncie, USA
Andy, it's "God bless America," and this American's tired of hearing it too. Can't even watch a baseball game without putting up with it during the seventh inning stretch. That's added to the fact that they started playing the national anthem at the beginning of games during WWII. Ho-hum.
Rick H, Kumano, JAPAN
Ronald Isham, you are mistaken, Ahmadinejad is Iranian and not Arab.
Farhad, London, UK
Why such anti-americanism? Sounds like the media messed this one up, not the American military. Thank God it wasn't a real crisis.
Rob, B'ham, UK
How did the Iranians mistake a Hungarian business plane for an American military plane? Maybe Ahmadinejad, was hoping for an oil price jump.
Bal Toga, Washington D.C., USA
More American trumpet blowing! When will we all be spared "GOD SAVE AMERICA!"
Andy Balmbra, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND
BARACK, CALL MAHMOUD NOW!
Barack Hussein Obama should get on the phone right now, one Arab to another, and talk some sense into Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I'm sure if the Democrat was president this would have never happened:
Ronald Isham, Boquete, Panama
Oh those crazy Iranians...American military in a French made plane...BWHAHAHAHA!!! and now for something really different...try that when the Isreali planes fly over...good luck with that,
James, New Orleans, USA
Yawn. Does anybody really care about all the stupid US / Iran name-calling and other nonsense when peoples' lives are melting down thanks to the economic problems?
"You want nukes"
"No we don't"
"Yes you do"
Keith, St Albans, UK
It's a big game of RISK, who's turn is it anyways?
Len B, Toronto, Canada
Mike,
Don't underestimate Russian SAMs. I was in the Navy a long time and it would be very unwise to dismiss the threat those missle pose to our combat aircraft. That being said, we have amazing pilots who are truly experts in their craft. Hopefully it won't come to that.
Brendan Smith, Dallas, TX, U.S.A.
If a US aircraft come into Iranian airspace you can pretty well be certain that there will a LOT more of them just behind it and the only thing that might be able to force one to 'land' is a very lucky shot from a Russian SAM.
Mike M, Boston MA, USA
Probably testing the oil market.
