Two of the Barclays Premier League’s new arrivals were embarrassed last night in the second round of the Carling Cup as West Bromwich Albion were eliminated by Hartlepool United and Hull City lost to Swansea City.
Robert Koren levelled matters at 1-1 in the 87th minute for West Brom to take their tie into extra time, but goals from David Foley and Richard Barker sealed an upset for the Coca-Cola League One club. An understrength Hull took an early lead against Swansea through Dean Windass, but Gorka Pintado equalised. The Spaniard then missed a late penalty, but Jordi Gómez made no mistake from the spot in extra time.
“It was an untypical performance,” Phil Brown, the Hull manager, said. “The workrate was there, but the discipline of the team wasn’t.”
Tony Pulis, the Stoke City manager, made ten changes from the team who beat Aston Villa last Saturday, but they still overcame Cheltenham Town with relative ease, winning 3-2.
The top four sides in the Coca-Cola Championship also tumbled out. The leaders, Birmingham City, were beaten 2-0 by Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. Wolverhampton Wanderers, the team below Birmingham, lost on penalties after a goalless draw against Rotherham United, conquerors of Sheffield Wednesday in the first round, while Bristol City were beaten 2-1 by Crewe Alexandra, of League One. Preston made an early exit after a 1-0 defeat by Derby County at Deepdale.
Paul Jewell may still be searching for the club’s first league victory in more than 11 months, but his side are developing a winning habit in the Carling Cup. “It’s a step in the right direction,” Jewell said.
Crystal Palace were thrashed 4-0 by Leeds United of League One at Elland Road, while Queens Park Rangers dispatched Carlisle United by the same score, Emmanuel Ledesma, on loan from Genoa, contributing a hat-trick.
Luton Town went down 5-1 to Reading at the Madejski Stadium. Wigan Athletic beat Notts County 4-0, while Watford needed extra time to see off Darlington 2-1.
