Blackburn Rovers overcame the shock of going a goal down inside seven minutes to see off Grimsby Town in the second round of the Carling Cup at Ewood Park last night. Paul Ince, the Blackburn manager, made eight changes to his starting line-up after the 1-1 draw against Hull City at the weekend but saw the visiting team grab a deserved early lead through Tom Newey’s curling free kick.

However, Carlos Villanueva scored an equaliser within ten minutes and the Barclays Premier League team went on to emphasise their superiority to win 4-1. Matt Derbyshire and Brett Emerton scored in the first half, with Derbyshire adding another after the break.

Fulham also had a scare as Danny Murphy scored with a deflected stoppage-time drive to secure a 3-2 victory against Leicester City at Craven Cottage. Fulham had taken an early lead when Zoltan Gera’s shot hit Michael Morrison and beat David Martin. But Paul Dickov and Andy King scored to give Leicester the lead, before Jimmy Bullard equalised.
