Will the real Lewis Hamilton stand up? Reebok and its technical partners fooled everyone at an elaborate presentation of Hamilton as its new ambassador yesterday, first by showing us a life-size, talking and moving hologram of the McLaren Mercedes driver.
Apart from a little fuzziness around the edges, it was impossible to tell that the hologram, “filmed” two weeks ago, was not the real deal until Hamilton walked on stage and stood next to it, wearing identical gear.
The detail that gave the real Hamilton away was a bump on his lip, apparently sustained while kayaking in Switzerland at the weekend. As the human version took over from the make-believe driver, the hologram first reduced itself to a see-through body picked out in green fluorescent lines and then curled itself up like a genie and disappeared into the ether.
Hamilton is being paid £10million over five years for his latest endorsement, in addition to the £75million he is being paid by McLaren over the same period, confirming the 23-year-old's status as Britain's highest-paid sportsman. The deal means that Hamilton is going to be even busier than he is already, with the danger being that his focus on race driving is going to become ever more blurred. In return for its largesse, Reebok is demanding ten days of Hamilton's time each year, which will pile on top of the scores of promotional days that he is already committed to on behalf of McLaren's sponsors. He also has extensive commitments with the team.
The presentation also revealed many details of the young driver's training regime. We discovered, for example, that Hamilton occasionally suffers from chafing problems “in certain areas” when he is training, that he has never peed into his driving suit during a race, and that he believes that he is fitter than Jenson Button.
After mis-hearing a question from the floor, Hamilton also spoke for the second time this year about how he would like to get into acting and films at some stage in his career, and talked of his friendships with film stars such as Denzel Washington and Will Smith, and Naomi Campbell, the supermodel. “They are people I look up to,” he said. “And I am able to turn to them and get some advice from them because they are in the same sort of situation as me.”
After disappointing races in Canada and France, where Hamilton made errors that have left him ten points adrift of Felipe Massa, the championship leader, he was asked whether he felt he needed to “do an Andy Murray” and stage a fightback on the “Centre Court” of Silverstone, in the British Grand Prix this weekend.
“I'd say it's different. I don't believe I need to do an Andy Murray. He did a great job and I am very happy for him,” Hamilton said, in reference to the Scot's comeback win at Wimbledon over Richard Gasquet on Monday evening.
“For me, I've got ten races to build upon. We saw last year that the season is very long. We've had a great season up to now, even with the lows ... and I'm not going to put all the pressure on myself to try and do it all in one race.”

He looks up to those three because they are BLACk people who've reached the pinnacle of their respective trade.
Your lack of empathy is understandable. You still see us as an inferior race.
There aren't many blacks at the top in Britain, but in the USA you see it in Sports, Politics, Culture.....
Raff, UK,
What LH has achieved and continues to do is amazing. If he had been in the sport for 10 years it would be impressive but since it's only his second season and he is 23 it's sensational. He is generally fantastic for F1 and for English sport. Hope his Silverstone form continues.

BLA, BLA, BLA, BLA...
How did that saying go? - Pur your money where your tongue is... I wonder if Lewis ever gets a chafed tongue.
Michel Angstadt, Serranillos del Valle, (Madrid) Spain
How sad! he looks up to a religious fanatic obsessed with himself and his own fame (Will Smith) and a supermodel ASBO (Naomi)
and what has he actually won in F1? Nothing.
Mike, Dudley,
LH, the overhyped man, so modest, smart and success empty of substance. This contract with Reebok probably will be his only success because it´s going to be hard for him not to replace FA as the youngest WC this 2008.
Reebok has done a good signing, LH is really talented selling smoke and mirrors.
Sylvia, Barcelona, Spain
Now I understand why LH don't wanted FA in Mac. With his new team mate, Kovalainen, he can be more relaxed. Bravo Lewis, bravo.
Ruben, Barcelona,
£10 million for fifty days work over five years! Overworked? Overpaid more like!
Jennifer, Bath, North Somerset
This guy is not concentrated in the racing. I'm worried. Too many parties and too many out of this world Hollywood stars. Lewis come back to reality please. Will Smith is a total nerd that America imposed on us due to the cultural supremacy of a country that has no culture.
Jordan, Leeds,
He really wants to be a superstar, not an F1 driver...
Ed, that's the second time in a row I get undertones of disapproval from your articles about Hamilton and his behaviour
Felipe, London, England
Telling how he's more preoccupied with a future in Hollywood, and his fashionista movie star friends than with cementing his reputation in F1. You'd never have heard Schumacher, Senna or Prost making such an inane comment...
Marco, Dubai,
A has been before he's really even started. Looks like fame and fortune have got in the way of his professionalism.
He's just another Tim Henman / Jenson Button to me.... All nearly men, but ultimately beleiving in their own hype to the point of distraction......
mark R, Notts, UK
£10 M and £75M... ...with 25 races under his belt and a habit of colliding onto parked cars must make him the most overpaid sportsman in history
qed, London, UK
It appears Andy Murray hasn't got a clothing/ footwear contract although the sportsman could uitilise the kit. What Reebok kit does Lewis wear that's integral to driving a car?
Murray has only his own talent/skill to rely on, Lewis has the benefit of the latest technology to make the difference.
JR, West Midlands, UK
Give Lewis a break. It takes time to get used to driving a silver Ferrari. Reading a 780 page DIY manual at 200mph is not as easy as it seems.
Jonathan, London,
NAOMI CAMPBELL!!!!..look up to??only because shes tall.
I would hope lewis would look elsewhere for his guidance,in any other walk of life she would be in jail
john, glasgow,
So have all the other drivers got 10 races to build on.
ronnie, bucks, UK
