This week's winner is Nick Blackman of Maidstone, Kent: “The photo was taken in June from one of the viewing platforms at the top cable car station on Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix Mont-Blanc. I got rather carried away with the whole experience, and we ended up spending two or three hours up there. I started photography with a cheap camera before taking the plunge and buying a Nikon D200.”

The runner-up was James Humphrey, whose photo was taken at Luang Prabang in Laos. “This was taken while on a day's cycling around the city. I stopped by the old river bridge where many of the people cross over.”

Nick wins a fine-art digital print from Metro Imaging for his breathtaking shot of tiny figures poised improbably on a mountain edge. The runner-up conjures up an unexpected symmetry on a rickety bridge, cleverly accentuated by the use of black and white.
